Hi, my name is Rob and I am still a boy at heart. I have been playing guitar since December 1988.
Since then I have played in several rock and pop bands and somewhere along the way found I was also able to write songs and compose music. Songwriting however is a relatively new discipline to me. It took me 10 years of playing lead guitar in bands where I didn’t write the songs, to suddenly find myself being able to compose my own music, which I became pretty prolific at. After a number of years co-writing with a talented singer/lyricist and then finding myself with no songwriting partner or band I decided that I wanted to write complete songs by myself. I had no problem coming up with music, but lyrics were always a big stumbling block for me, mainly due to being over critical of my work and worried about whether people would like what I wrote.
In December 2007 I decided that I would jump into the unknown and be a songwriter. I made a commitment to myself that no matter how good or bad my songs were I would share them and proclaim that "I am a songwriter!" I decided to just not care about what feedback I received, especially the feedback from my own self-critical mind.
The best way I could think of to keep me committed to this new path and to keep consistently writing, so I could become better and better at songwriting and maybe even improve my voice was to start a podcast. This proved to be one of the most empowering decisions I have ever made. The biggest challenge was getting the first song written before my set deadline, which was the end of 2007. I finished the song on December 30th and it took me about15 minutes to write the lyrics. As I mentioned before, the music just flowed and still does without me having to put in any conscious effort, so nearly all of my energy was being put into focusing on achieving the goal of writing the lyrics.
So this one decision to be something I really wanted to be, culminated in me being what I really wanted to be and after seven months of making every deadline, every week with a new song I have no doubt in my mind when I tell people that I am a songwriter. Now it’s time to take things to the next level. You don’t get points for staying the same, so the trick is to keep growing in whatever direction your creativity takes you. I am now raising the profile of my musical output in order to make a living and let me be very clear that when I say a "living" I mean a very nice living thank you very much!
I hope that my passion and enthusiasm for what I do translates to an enjoyable and inspiring experience for those who listen to my songs. That’s the intention and that’s what I’ll keep on doing as long as I can.
I’m here for you. I play for you and I present a part of my spirit to you. I hope that has a positive effect on you and all those who you tell about The Weekly Songcast.
Thank you and Enjoy!
Rob The Boy @ Heart
